If you’re searching for something eccentric in the music scene, look no further than James Davis. A band that comprises of the siblings Jess, Rey, and Auston, hailing from Los Angeles. Their self-titled EP is set for May 18th, a deep expression of creativity with meaning that brings this group above standard expectations. All six songs are great and are thoughtfully constructed, mirroring personal experiences and common emotional encounters.
The first song is Better Than You Are , which opens with elegant piano lightly humming under soft vocals. The chorus catches the transitions of momentary silence, adding a dramatic rise even with a relaxing melody. Heavy drums beat like a heart pounding from catharsis. The lyricism addresses the idealization of individuals in our lives, especially those we trust and look to for help. A beautiful female voice sings, “But I will be better than you are…better than you could be. A shadow wont be given, but I gray with the sun… ” Each sibling has their own unique voice with marvelous range and tone. It’s a fantastic start to a track list full of talent.
The other creations are very colorful. Wish You Bye is an acoustic dream, with fingers picking free a sweet sound. The singer serenades, “Wish you bye bye. Put candles on my cake… You don’t know my age…”. Although Praise is drastically different from the rest of the tracks by deviating using synth, trumpets, and cymbals, it still retains a chill sense, with a club feel. The poetry directly talks about going to the club, getting drunk, and looking for fulfillment in a hungry environment.
As James Davis concludes with On Me, it’s evident that this is a genuine production worthy of the anyone’s time. The last song is upbeat and so damn catchy. Everything on this EP is pleasurable, which is a rare accomplishment. The experience is like watching the wind smooth over a sun drenched field while contemplating life. It’s an inebriating touch that’s powerfully executed.
