MS MR – How Does It Feel
Columbia Records
The indie pop band MS MR was formed in 2010 by Lizzy Plapinger and Max Hershenow, a vocalist and a producer. Now Having released their second studio album How Does it Feel, they’ve seen some healthy exposure for their talented work. The new LP retains their prior moody atmosphere while being more robust in its approach; a bit more confident than before.
Intro song, “Painted,” uses Lizzy’s voice for the chorus, which is a reoccurring trend on the album. She sings, “What did you think would happen” again and again overlapping herself. It feels a bit awkward to hear it, but the trumpets and piano paint a confident atmosphere. Criminals is reminiscent of the early 2000’s. It has digital samples and feels like like it’s club worthy. “Do you wanna break out. Do you ya. Do you ya… I just want to be a criminal with you.” “Wrong Victory” is slower, with subtle cymbal taps and more piano. “When your skin doesn’t feel like home. And I don’t want to break down and feel alone.” Most of the lyrics are emotional, addressing uncomfortable feelings and helplessness, often referencing a partner. Like “Leave Me Alone” – more trumpets and words like, “The only way I know you love me, is when you leave me alone. Please just leave me alone.” The formula follows a reserved beginning, eventually leading to a rising chorus and robust instruments midway. Finishing track “All the Things Lost” is a bit of an exception. It’s a soft piano piece that finishes the album on a moody note.
Between the sampled beats and echoing voice, How Does it Feel has potential to be very entertaining and fun. At times, it’s exhausting hearing her sing the same themes in the same manner each time. Although the songs are catchy and well composed, it’s hard to be completely engaged. The album is close to hitting the sweet spot. Maybe a bit more eclectic vocals or explorative lyricism could help. For MR MS, the new LP is a reflection of a successful start.
